State Senate approves Niagara Wine Trail expansion Lewiston Porter Sentinel, March 25, 2006 The state Senate unanimously approved legislation on March 8 to expand the eastern branch of the Niagara Wine Trail, known as “Niagara Wine Trail East.” The new section of the trail will begin at the intersection of routes 104 and 425 in Cambria and stretch northward on Route 425 to Wilson, where it will turn onto Route 18 and continue eastward to the Niagara-Orleans county line. “The fact that we’ve had to expand the Niagara Wine Trail is an indication that wineries and their popularity are growing in our region,” said state Sen. George Maziarz, R-62nd District, the bill’s prime sponsor. “They’re interested in being part of the Niagara Wine Trail because they know that this designation helps put them on the map.” The Niagara Wine Trail was created in 2002 and expanded in 2004 and 2005. It has proven to be an effective marketing tool for the wineries in the Niagara Region. “At the state level, we’re committed to doing all we can to help this growing sector of our agri-tourism industry succeed,” Maziarz said. The state Assembly is expected to act on the legislation later this month. |
