Lew-Port graduate participates in Harvard conference

Jeffrey M. Shaw, a former Lewiston resident and 1988 graduate of Lewiston-Porter High School, was among 168 graduate students in the United States and Canada who participated in the annual Harvard University Graduate School of Education Student Research Conference and International Forum, held last month.

Shaw, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland, is a social studies teacher at Governor Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Md. He is a graduate of Buffalo State College, where he earned a master of science degree in history in 2001. During his final year of graduate studies at Buffalo State, he received of the Weaver Award for outstanding historical research.

The Feb. 24 conference showcased the research of graduate students representing 28 colleges.

Shaw led a roundtable discussion on the topic, “History Games: A Revolutionary Strategy for Teaching History in the 21st Century.”

He was recently awarded a graduate assistantship at the University of Maryland and will continue his doctoral studies there full time in the fall. In addition, he will be part of a research team working on a U.S. Department of Education grant.

Shaw is the son of Michael and Michele Shaw of Lewiston.
