‘Get Hired Week’ at Niagara University

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, March 25, 2006

The Dress for Success Fashion Show will kick off Get Hired Week at Niagara University on Monday, March 27. The show, which will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the lower level of the Gallagher Center, will feature Maryalice Demler, news anchor on WGRZ-TV, as narrator. It’s the first of five events in the annual Get Hired Week, which runs through March 31.

Nearly 20 Niagara students will model professional dress provided by The Outlets at Niagara Falls merchants Geoffrey Beene, Dress Barn, Anne Klein, and Off 5th Saks. Two students will also receive makeovers by Pecoraro Salon of Lockport. Two university members will also help model clothing: Dr. John Helmuth, dean of the College of Business Administration, and Monica Saltarelli, campus minister and adjunct professor of religious studies.

Get Hired Week continues Tuesday with guest speaker Rob Sullivan. His lecture, “Packaging Your Potential: Lessons from a Job Hunter Who Learned the Hard Way,” will be held at 7 p.m. in Room 127 of Dunleavy Hall. Sullivan’s lecture is sponsored by Niagara University’s campus programming board. Sullivan is a national speaker and author of “Getting Your Foot in the Door When You Don’t Have a Leg to Stand On.”

“Get Hired Week is an opportunity for Niagara students to gain the soft skills that are so critical in finding employment in today’s competitive job market – from appropriate business attire and etiquette to tips on how to find a job – and then putting into practice what they’ve learned when meeting employers at the career expo,” said Marty Troia, director of Niagara University’s Office of Career Development.

Other events include Career Expo 2006, a job fair for college students or graduates of all majors, which will be held on Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the upper level of the Gallagher Center. Approximately 70 employers, including Greater Niagara Newspapers, GEICO, five federal agencies (FBI, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, U.S. Department of State, and U.S. Probation), two state agencies (the Department of Labor and the Department of Taxation & Finance), Catholic Health System, Citigroup, Red Roof Inns, and Hard Rock Café. A complete updated list of employers is available at http://www.niagara.edu/career/CEReps.htm. The Career Expo 2006 is open to all college students or graduates.

A Dining for Success Etiquette Dinner with etiquette expert John Bourdage will be held Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Heritage Room in Clet Hall. A North Tonawanda native, Bourdage is a highly respected etiquette expert who graduated in 1985 from London’s Ivor Spencer School of British Butler Administration. The dinner is open to Niagara University students only.

LIFE After Niagara, a young alumni networking panel and social for Niagara University seniors, will complete the week’s events on Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m., in The Ratt in Clet Hall. The event is sponsored by NU’s Alumni Relations Office and the Niagara University Student Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management and is open to Niagara University seniors only.
