Vikings win Fredonia indoor soccer tourney

The Grand Island Vikings Girls Soccer team won its third championship at the Fredonia State Indoor Soccer Tournament on Feb. 12. The Vikings, who were sponsored by the Grand Island branch of HSBC Bank USA, finished the tournament with a 6-0-1 record. The Grand Island Vikings Girls Soccer team won its third championship at the Fredonia State Indoor Soccer Tournament on Feb. 12. The Vikings finished the tournament with a 6-0-1 record.

In the preliminary round, Grand Island defeated Bolivar II 3-1, Lake Shore 10-0, West Seneca West 5-0, and Bolivar 2-0, while tying Livonia 2-2. Going into the playoffs, the top-seeded Vikings beat Bolivar II 8-2 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game, where they topped Livonia 3-2.

Jessica Remmes led the team with 10 goals. Alicia Fisher tallied eight goals, while Dana Szczepaniak registered five goals. Catie Hilliard had 4 goals and Jordan Dudish, Heather Buzzelli and Sam Drexelius each contributed two goals. Jackie Coe chipped in one goal for the Vikings, who outscored their opposition 33-7.

Casey Carminati, Coe, Dudish and Buzzelli anchored the Grand Island defense. Goaltender Kristin Wegrzyn made several key saves throughout the tournament, recorded three shutouts and allowed only seven goals in seven games.
