Pearl Harbor Day observed Grand Island Dispatch, December 9, 2005
A color guard from the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9249 stands at attention in the brisk cold on Wednesday to pay tribute to American soldiers who lost their lives during the attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet Center at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941.Veterans and families gathered for services. Grand Island Supervisor Peter McMahon gave a short address, and Joe Snyakowski, a World War II veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, stepped in as chaplain for the day. VFW Post 9249 Commander Dan McMahon provided welcoming remarks and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Taps will be played by trumpeters Kevin Laurendi and Joe Orsolits of the Grand Island High School Band. Hot coffee and doughnuts were available inside following the service. (photo by Barbi Lare) |
