Rotary Club Student of the Month: Michael Schimley, a lifelong Island resident, has attended Grand Island schools since kindergarten. Schimley has balanced an academically challenging curriculum along with extracurricular activities, both at school and in the community. He has taken advanced classes since sixth grade, including Advanced Placement European History, U.S. History, Statistics and College Spanish, while maintaining high honor roll and honor roll consistently. Schimley currently is a member of the National Honor Society and has received the academic certificate, academic pin and academic letter in recognition of his academic achievements. Schimley also is a Scholar Athlete for both soccer and track and has received a varsity letter in soccer, track and music. He is on the Superintendent’s Advisory Council and is active in Student Council, the Interact Club, the yearbook and the internship program. Schimley also has enjoyed playing trumpet in the wind ensemble, concert band, jazz ensemble, pep band, pit orchestra and brass choir, as well as the Practice Buddies music program. He has been very active in the community, as well, particularly with the Grand Island Soccer Club as a player, U10 house coach, a referee and a referee mentor. He also has been a USSF licensed referee since 2001. He has participated in such activities as Student Olympics, Relay for Life, Meaghan’s Miracle, West Seneca Day at St. Stephen’s Church, Lion’s Club Spaghetti Dinner and the St. Stephen’s food drive. After graduation, Schimley plans to attend college
with a major in Business Administration, with hopes of having
a career in management. |
