Vocal coach Debbie Bello warms the “Buffalo Idol” finalists up on Tuesday.

Caitlin Koch won “Janet and Nick’s Buffalo Idol” contest Wednesday. Koch, 15, nabbed 30.3 percent of votes cast online at www.kiss985.com.

“Oh my god,” an excited Koch said just after 7 a.m., as Kiss morning show host Janet Snyder announced her the winner.

The Orchard Park native relied on classmates at Orchard Park High School as well as support from Canisius College - where her brother is a student - to win the third annual singing competition.

“I went out, I told everyone I knew to vote,” Koch said. “It feels awesome.”

The competition to find Western New York’s top singer began with a Kiss 98.5-FM talent search on Oct. 18. 500 hopefuls performed, and 30 semi-finalists were chosen. Over the course of six Mondays, those singers performed live and in the Kiss studio for morning show hosts Snyder, Nicholas Picholas and Wease. Kiss listeners voted online each week narrowing the field to six finalists.

Those who made the final cut sang live on Tuesday in the Boulevard Mall food court. Each finalist performed one full song. Listeners determined the winner by online vote, with each computer IP address counted once.

Koch will open the radio station’s annual “Kissmas Bash” concert on Friday, Dec. 17, at HSBC Arena. Artists slated to perform at the holiday show include Avril Lavigne, Gavin DeGraw, Simple Plan, Vanessa Carlton and Buffalo’s own Seven Day Faith. Sponsors include Niagara University and Kustom Workz.

Additionally, Koch is afforded the opportunity to record a three-song demo with Audio Magic, which will be sent to various record companies. Grand Island’s Marc Scibilia won last year’s competition, and released a self-titled album soon after.

This year’s six finalists will perform “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” together at the “Kissmas Bash.” Local vocal coach Debbie Bello has been working with this year’s competitors each week, and will produce the group’s act.

The finalists practice “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” which they will perform together at the “Kissmas Bash” Dec. 17.
