First responders hold Community Day

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, November 20, 2004

Last month, volunteer fire companies in the towns of Lewiston and Porter offered area residents and future firefighters a glimpse of what life is like as an emergency responder as part of their Community Day exercises, held in the back parking lot of the Lewiston Porter Middle School on the Creek Road campus. In the photo above, members of Lewiston #1 Volunteer Fire Co. ready their equipment for a typical fire call before onlookers, while at right Ransomville fire company members provide a glimpse of what’s involved in a typical response call.

Participants included Lewiston #1, Upper Mountain, Ransomville and Youngstown volunteer fire companies, along with members of US. Coast Guard Station Niagara, who provided visitors a close-up look at its rescue boat equipment which cruise the lower Niagara River. Despite the rainy weather, officials reported a good turnout of visitors for the event, which featured such activities as search and rescue exercises, “Jaws of Life” extractions, equipment exhibits, fire rescue efforts and child car safety seat checks.
