Last Saturday, all eyes were on the Wheatfield Community/Senior Center as six candidates competed for the 2004 Miss Wheatfield Scholarship Pageant.

After undergoing a 15-minute interview with the five judges Friday afternoon, the contestants had to deliver their prepared messages, demonstrate their talents, display their evening gowns and answer on-stage questions. Once the candidates completed all four categories, it was up to the judges to determine the 2004 Miss Wheatfield as well as the winners of six individual awards.

With all votes tabulated, Wheatfield Town Supervisor Timothy Demler, who hosted the event together with 2003 Miss Wheatfield, Sarah Richardson announced Jennifer Plummer of North Tonawanda as the new Miss Wheatfield.

"This means a lot to me," said Plummer, after accepting the crown from her predecessor.

A graduate student at Niagara University, Plummer hopes to improve literacy among children and adults during her reign as Miss Wheatfield.

"I like to go to the public and get the word out to improve literacy in New York state," she said.

In the upcoming weeks, Plummer plans to visit area elementary schools to promote reading as a lifelong activity.

"I also plan to go out to libraries and read to children, or go to book stores and let people know about reading," she said. "I'd also like to see September declared as National Literacy Month."
