Quiznos opens its doors on the Island

by Robin M. Woolson
Grand Island Dispatch, May 21, 2004

Quiznos Subs officially opened its doors Monday with the ceremonial cutting of the first sub. Owners Mike and Olga Gatas, center, made the cut with local officials in attendance to celebrate the opening of this new business.

Following the ceremonial cutting of the first sub, Quiznos officially opened for business on Monday with several people coming in to get their first taste of the company's subs.

Quiznos is located in the plaza with Tops on Grand Island Boulevard.

Owners Mike and Olga Gatas of the town of Tonawanda opened this franchise location on Grand Island because they felt this was a good area to be.

"There is a population of about 19,000 and it seemed as if there was something like this needed on the Island," Mike said. "It will save the residents from having to go across the bridge to purchase this product and I know the Islanders will support this business."

"We know we'll do well here," Olga agreed. "Once you try our subs, you'll see how good it is."

Mike said that Quiznos is different from other sub places because every sandwich is toasted.

"We toast all of them, unless a customer says 'no'," Mike said.

He said the consistency and the quality of the product is what people will look forward to eating.

"Consistency is the key," Mike said. "Whether you eat a Quiznos sub in Grand Island or in California, the quality of the sandwich stays the same."

Mike said there were many feelings they were going through as the days began to count down to officially opening the their Grand Island store.

"We were looking forward to getting started," Mike said. "We were excited, nervous and anxious these last three days."

Mike said that the family did a lot of researching and investigation about Quiznos before they decided this was what they wanted to do.

Quiznos is open Monday through Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
