Community
Missions of Niagara Falls is sponsoring its sixth annual
“Feet or Famine” Walk on Saturday, May 3. The event begins at 10:30
a.m.
in Whirlpool State Park. Proceeds will benefit Crisis Services
at Community Missions, which includes the organization’s soup kitchen.
That particular entity serves more than 65,000 meals to those in
need each year. Proceeds also will benefit the Mission’s homeless
shelter, which provides meals and a place to stay for more than

Community
Services for the Developmentally Disabled is seeking volunteers
for Project Community Outreach and Crisis Hotline at its Kenmore
office. Project COACH provides information, referrals, outreach,
counseling and crisis intervention to people with developmental disabilities
that utilize the telephone hotline. Volunteers should have a high
school diploma or a GED. Community Services will provide training.

The
Erie County Department of Motor Vehicles Full Service Auto Bureau Mobile
Unit continues each Wednesday at Grand Island Town Hall, Town
Clerk's office, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Although all but the Cheektowaga
bureau in Erie County have been closed, the Grand Island site’s Wednesday
hours remain, as they are funded through a state grant.
Erie County
Legislator Michele Ianello, D-Tonawanda, Grand Island, is establishing
a satellite outreach office on Grand Island. Starting Feb. 22, a member
of her staff will be available in Grand Island Town Hall, 2255 Baseline
Road, from noon to 4 p.m., on the second and fourth Wednesday of every
month to answer questions and offer literature regarding county services.
A second Grand Island site and time will be announced at a later date.

Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York is interested
in bringing its support group services to the Niagara Falls area.
To do that, volunteers are needed to facilitate
such gatherings for caregivers of persons with dementia. Facilities
are also sought. No counseling experience is necessary. Training is

Alzheimer's
Caregiver's Support Group - Peregrine's Landing Senior Community,

Blood
Donors Needed - There is currently a critical blood shortage.
The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent national appeal for
blood donations. National blood inventory levels have dropped well
below a safe and adequate supply. In order to meet the needs of
hospital patients across the nation, the American Red Cross strongly
urges anyone who is eligible to give blood to call 1-800 GIVE-LIFE
as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to donate. Giving
blood is a safe process, is easy, and takes very little time. Although
about 60 percent of the people in America are eligible to donate
blood, only 5 percent do. Donations are critically needed; please
act now by giving the gift of life. Anyone at least 17 years of
age, weighing 110 pounds or more and feeling in good health may
be eligible to donate blood. Patients are counting on your life
saving generosity.

Screening - The Niagara Falls Chapter of the American Red Cross
has resumed its blood pressure screening service. Volunteer nurses area
available each Thursday, from noon to 2 p.m., at the chapter’s headquarters,

Center
for Anxiety Research Clinic - People who have experienced a
serious auto or motorcycle accident and are troubled by accident-related
stress are encouraged to participate in a federally-funded research
clinic through the University at Buffalo Department of Psychology’s
Center for Anxiety Research. Symptoms may include being too anxious
to drive, nightmares, trouble concentrating, intrusive thoughts and
anxiety. Participants will receive a free evaluation and treatment concentrating
on alleviating signs and symptoms of post-trauma stress. For more information

Dexterity
Limitation Study - Individuals with dexterity limitations resulting
from arthritis, cerebral palsy or any disability leaving them with a
minimum use of their hands or who are amputees or who have use of only
one arm as a result of stroke are needed to participate in a six-month
study. Participants will be asked to try out automatic jar opening devices
while their observations regarding ease are recorded. The study will
begin with a two-hour clinical study at the Western New York Independent
Living Project, Inc., located at 3108 Main St., Buffalo. For more information

Electric
Wheelchairs - All Medicare recipients should now be aware that
if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease,
respiratory disorders, and/or have difficulty walking or propelling
a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair

The
Erie County Senior Services Caregiver Support Group meets the
fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Schofield Residence, 3333

Flu Shots
- The Muscular Dystrophy Association will provide free flu
shots to people with any of the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.

Disposal - Mount
St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Center, 5300 Military Road,
Lewiston, reminds the community that personal syringes and
sharps may be disposed of on site at no charge. Materials must
be in a rigid, puncture-proof, unbreakable container with a
screw top and label. The container must read “biohazard” or
“contains sharps,” and should be written with a waterproof
marker. Examples of acceptable containers include laundry detergent
containers and bleach bottles. The larger the opening, the
safer the container. Syringes and sharps may be dropped off

donations. National blood inventory levels have dropped well below a
